The Drama - Cal’s Review - 8/10

This movie was pretty great! The trailers did a good job of keeping the plot mysterious enough to entice you in, but clear enough in it’s performances being the carrier, which they certainly were.

Robert and Zendaya are both really fun, and uncomfortable to watch at the same time, particularly as that twist begins to unfold. You’re taken from a romantic and well-meaning relationship perspective to something much darker and more sinister, with some background human morals to consider too.

It was smart to portray so many characters as morally grey and problematic, because as clear cut as it can feel, it does make you think about the levels to justification in time passage, intent, change, and growth as a human, and how far you can stretch forgiveness and your truth.

I think I’d have scored this higher if not for the last 20-30 minutes, the ending (plot-wise) felt a little messy and not entirely necessary, I think the grey area with Zendaya was enough to keep the film interesting and engaging enough, and seeing that develop, the mix with Robert’s mistake threw things up in the air, almost too high to come back down in a satisfying way by the end.

Other than that, two incredible performers in yet another movie together this year, both of which made the film incredibly watchable given the material, and definitely worth the watch if you get the chance.
